Pacifist is an application for Mac OS X that opens up.pkg installer packages,.dmg disk images,.zip,.tar,.tar.gz,.tar.bz2,.pax, and.xar archives, and more,. When Mac OS X Snow Leopard was released into the wild one of the major changes was the addition of a new version of Quicktime - Quicktime X. Not all Mac users were happy though.
Basically, I want to uninstall my old version of quicktime. I basically corrupted it (I believe) because it won't open. When I remove the app from my mac, it's no longer there. However, whenever I'm trying to re-install using the official Quicktime 7.6.4 on apple.com - it won't let me. It gives me an error message saying: 'Quicktime can't be installed on this disc. This version of Quicktime 7 can't be installed on the disc because Quicktime X is already present. Please us Software update to install the appropriate version of QuickTime for your mac'. The problem is, when I go to my software update..it doesn't detect that it needs to be updated. So..how am I supposed to fix it? And when I try to open movie files, Quick time isn't even detected as an option (even if I browse). As far as my knowledge..Quicktime is NO LONGER on my mac..yet it insists that it is. I just want to start fresh, I want to be able to re-install it. But it won't let me. Anyone have any advice for this maddening problem? And just a little more info - (the way i corrupted the file in the first place) - I was trying to install Quicktime Pro 7 and it kept claiming my mac had the newest version. So I removed quicktime completely, and it kept telling me that quicktime (newer version was on my mac, even tho I removed it, even from the Library section) - then I used the Leopard boot up, and used the optional install..and now the file showed back up, but it doesn't have the quicktime logo, (has the application logo) - and it's non responsive. So I deleted that too...but as I said, when I try to install it again from Apple.com..it's a no go. Message was edited by: BenjaminLinus815
iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.2)

I had an issue this week, where somebody (not saying who, but it’s not the user’s fault in this instance) tossed the Quicktime Player application from /Applications on a 10.6.x Mac. Since that’s an application that’s included with the OS, there’s not a separate installer for it. Fortunately, other folks have had this problem before, so I was able to use this procedure to reinstall Quicktime Player without reinstalling the whole OS:
1. Downloaded and installed Pacifist.
2. Inserted a 10.6.x install DVD (I used a 10.6.3 install DVD in this case)
3. Opened Pacifist and chose “Open Apple Install Disks” (this part can take a few minutes to run)
4. Searched for “Quicktime Player.app”
5. Selected “Quicktime Player.app” (in Essentials.pkg/Applications) and chose “Install to Default Location” with administrator privileges.
6. Once Quicktime Player X was back in /Applications, I then ran the 10.6.7 Combo Update to make sure that the Quicktime application was fully updated.
Following the Combo update and reboot, I was then able to open a number of *ahem* test files from http://trailers.apple.com/ without a problem.
